Linux Steampunk desktop MkI by yereverluvinuncleber Linux Steampunk desktop MkI by yereverluvinuncleber
My Linux Mint desktop demonstrating the same steampunk wallpaper as per my Windows systems and also my steampunk icons.

The dock to display the icons is Avant Window Manager which is the only Linux dock that I have tested that can handle irregularly shaped, ie. non-square icons. These are the same icons that are used within Windows for a tool such as Rocketdock, being PNG images they can be used by either system.

No special fonts used yet and no widgets installed as the widgets I have written do not yet run on Linux Mint. We have one widget that runs on Kubuntu and you can see that here: yereverluvinuncleber.deviantar…

Note that Ruth Claassen (bertnernie on DeviantArt) plagiarised a large number of works by other authors/artists - this may be one of them. Her account is now banned/closed. Good to see that reporting artists for plagiarising other's art actually works!

Yes, of course, but you'll have to wait a few days. I have to write it up first.
It will appear here when done: [link]

Keep an eye out.

That is very good. I suppose I could use this on Linux Mint. My old HP laptop is a little underpowered though and I guess it might struggle, that is why I am keeping my desktop simple at the mo.

Thanks, Sam originally created it on Mint. Can't remember if he was running LMDE or regular Mint at the time.

I very much like your design too. :)

I ought not to be tempted by other's designs as it stops me from developing my own desktop further. I shall look away! :)

I will do a little more research into blackbox. I did some digging into the various shells awhile back and found the onbes available then to be a little too esoteric, requiring unix-style minds to fathom. The initial result was so differet from my windows experience that they were hard to reconsile the two. Installing one, in effect removed the other. I will try blackbox and it sounds like a useful tool. For a start, the widgets/plugins, what languages do the widgets support?

Most shells have their own characteristics and perhaps they ARE a bit esoteric, most coming from the Linux camp. But Blackbox is one of the easiest to use. Plugins just adapt to the language you use. No problems there

I will give Blackbox a go as soon as I have a little free time. With regard to the widgets though, my widgets are a collection of transparent PNGs - they are described in an XML file whose function/animation is achieved using javascript. As far as you know does the widget/plugin functionality of Blackbox support javascript? Can I write plugins for Blackbox using my meagre skills and is transparency supported?

Yes to all. However, after a while I think you'll drop widgets in favor of BB plugins. It's more logical, since they consume less RAM AND change colors and textures with each theme switch, something widgets don't do.
